on Remembrance Sunday 9 Nov, 11.45 am, BBC Radio 4
"a concise, pithy and beautifully judged portrait" (Paul Donovan, Sunday Times)

The Menin Gate in the little Belgian city of Ypres is an extraordinary symbol of remembrance - the Last Post has sounded every night since 1929 (bar WW2) and it's the most visited site on the Western Front. This is a little cameo for Remembrance Day, following ''the Roots of the British Legion'' last year and ''the Roots of Remembrance Day'' the year before.
One of the most striking sights at the Menin Gate ceremony today is the number of young people who attend and are visibly affected by what their great-grandfathers and great-uncles went through almost a century ago. So a highlight of this programme is a visit by the famous Christs Hospital School Band, marching from the centre of Ypres to the Gate where they opened that evening’s ceremony. We also hear what these children feel about the experience, and we have insightful contributions from Professor Jay Winter, a leading historian of remembrance, on the subtle significance of the Menin Gate.
