Description:

Course members will be are chosen by the League Managers Association at the end of 2005 and they will attend the course at Warwick in June 2006. They will study for a certificate in applied management in football. The course is designed to give would be managers a better grasp of financial and media matters as well as improving their skills in motivating players. One of the problems facing the course is that while some players have sports degrees and are used to the academic world, a high proportion left school at 16. Sue Bridgewater says that what they lack in academic skills they make up for in sheer competativeness.

The series will include interviews with past graduates including Stuart Pierce who now works at Manchester City. Brian McClaire and Iffy Onuora both have degrees and have attended the Warwick course.

The progamme will follow the League's decision making process in selecting the players with the most management potential. We will then join the players at the course at Warwick and interview other managers about the task they face, and conclude by following their first appointment as a football manager.

The league has a strict code of conduct for managers. They're not allowed to bring the game into disrepute nor argue with a referee. As the news in April 2005 shows, where Fulham manager Chris Coleman was restrained by players from both teams as he tried to remonstrate with a referee at the end of a Premiership match, it's not always that easy to comply.

The series will take the listener inside two football clubs and inside the lives of two former players at a time of great change and controversy for football.
